(Ulu Cami)

(Koza Han)

(Tophane Parkı)

(Cumalıkızık)

(Kaymak)

(Pide)

(Hamal)

🌐 #2. Journey to Bursa: A City of History, Green Landscapes, and Heartwarming Encounters

1. Welcome to Green Bursa: Turkey’s 4th Largest Metropolis

Bursa, the magnificent first capital of the Ottoman Empire, is now a thriving metropolis home to around 3 million people. Nestled at the foot of Mount Uludağ, it is affectionately known as “Yeşil Bursa” (Green Bursa) due to its lush forests and parks. As a vital stop on the historical Silk Road, it preserves a timeless charm through its breathtaking Islamic architecture and bustling traditional bazaars.

2. Accommodation: A Convenient 2-Night Stay at Lena Central Flats (via Vrbo)

To fully immerse ourselves in the local lifestyle, we rented a welcoming apartment called ‘Lena Central Flats (Lena Apt)’ located in the historic Tuzpazarı district through [Vrbo]. Instead of a standalone private house, this was a spacious 2-bedroom apartment featuring a cozy living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a main bathroom, and two bedrooms—including one with a private ensuite bathroom—providing a true home-away-from-home experience.

Coming up the narrow slope from the main Haşim İşcan Street, there is a large open-air parking lot on the left, and our 3-story building stood right in front of it. This location was an absolute jackpot, allowing us to leave our rental car securely parked and explore the heart of Bursa entirely on foot. Walking just a short path behind the building on ‘Ekşielma Street’ leads directly into the bustling traditional Tuzpazarı bazaar. Passing through the market brings you right to the Cumhuriyet Street tramline, where world-class landmarks like the majestic Ulu Cami (Grand Mosque) and the historic Koza Han (Silk Market) are all within a short 5 to 10-minute walk. It was the perfect, highly recommended base for a seamless, car-free exploration of historic Bursa.

② Şehreküstü Square & Koza Han (The Silk Market)

Right near the vibrant center lies Koza Han, built in 1491. Despite the chilly winter air, we had an incredible time bargaining with local merchants for handcrafted mufflers and Niqabs (Islamic face veils). Sitting in its historical 2-story courtyard café while sipping traditional Turkish tea makes you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time.

④ The Citadel Viewpoint: Tophane Park (Tophane Parkı)

Perched high on the ancient fortress walls, Tophane Park is an absolute crown jewel of Bursa’s landmarks. In its center stands the magnificent 6-story stone Tophane Clock Tower (Tophane Saat Kulesi), built during the Ottoman era. Next to it lies an open observation square with an unforgettable panoramic view over the entire city, featuring the #BURSA sign block and a charming red replica of a vintage nostalgic tramcar (Nostaljik Tramvay) that creates a perfect photo spot. It also houses the grand tombs of Osman Gazi (founder of the Ottoman Empire) and his son Orhan Gazi, showcasing beautiful traditional Islamic ceiling art and royal sarcophagi, capped by a precise and fascinating changing of the guard ceremony.

① The UNESCO Project House: Küpeli Ev

Walking the alleys, we visited ‘Küpeli Ev’ (The Earring House), a 350-year-old traditional home beautifully restored by the UNESCO Club. Named after the earring-like Fuchsia flowers that bloom around it, we paid a small cash entrance fee, slipped plastic covers over our shoes, and explored the collection of well-preserved Ottoman kitchenware and folk artifacts. Further along, you will also spot the sign for the ‘Cumalıkızık Culture and Life Mansion’, a famous traditional filming location turned historical house.

② Authentic Turkish Coffee at Tarhan Gözleme Evi

As it was early morning, I stepped into a small restaurant and café called ‘Tarhan Gözleme Evi,’ nestled among wooden houses filled with the old-world charm of the Ottoman Empire, to warm up from the winter chill. Decorated with rustic arched wooden tables, traditional chairs, a cast-iron stove bearing the marks of time, and cozy items like carpet cushions with traditional patterns, it is a place that offers a coziness making you feel as if you have traveled back to the Ottoman era in a time machine. We ordered authentic Turkish Coffee (Türk Kahvesi), a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Served in a small, beautifully patterned cup, this unfiltered coffee leaves a rich layer of fine grounds at the bottom. Enjoying it with sweet Turkish Delight (Lokum), warm water to cleanse the palate, and a cube of sugar was the ultimate remedy for winter travel fatigue.

5. A Culinary Adventure: 3 Essential Local Foods

① İskender Kebap

The pride of Bursa, featuring thinly sliced grilled lamb topped with hot tomato sauce and sizzling melted sheep’s butter poured right at your table.

② Kaymak

Kaymak is a creamy dairy product made by collecting and solidifying milk fat, and it is said that the proper way to eat it is to spread a generous amount of kaymak on warm baked baguette, sliced bread, or Turkish bread, and top it with honey. Thick clotted cream served with pure honey and fresh bread—a taste of heaven that melts instantly in your mouth.

There are also a wide variety of Kaymak products. The brand in the photo was the most delicious one.

6. Exploring Bursa on Foot: From the Panorama Museum to Tophane Park, and the Mighty ‘Hamal’ Porters

The true charm of traveling in Bursa lies in walking through its timeless streets, where history and daily life intertwine beautifully. Our walking route began at the futuristic, domed ‘Panorama 1326 Bursa Conquest Museum’. After taking in the massive 360-degree historical paintings, we enjoyed a relaxing stroll through the front courtyard and into the lush green spaces of the surrounding Kamberler Park (Kamberler Parkı).

As we navigated the vibrant, narrow market alleys flanking the park, we witnessed one of the most raw and memorable sights of our trip. We encountered local porters straining every muscle to pull massive loads—tightly packed in giant fabric sacks—on oversized, heavy handcarts. These men are known as Hamal, traditional market porters who have been the vital backbone of the city’s trade since the Ottoman era. In the tight market passages where modern delivery trucks cannot physically enter, their heavy breathing and the sweat on their brows revealed the powerful, resilient energy of making a living. Though their labor is incredibly harsh, when we stepped aside to clear the path, they looked up with bright, genuine smiles and a warm nod, letting us experience the deep-rooted hospitality of Bursa firsthand.

Leaving the bustling alleys behind, we made our way to the street across from Kamberler Park. To our delight, we found a public outdoor escalator built into the hillside, designed to carry pedestrians effortlessly up the steep terrain toward the higher historic districts. Hopping on this escalator allowed us to save our energy and smoothly ascend to Tophane Park (Tophane Parkı), the highest citadel viewpoint offering breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views over the entire sprawling city of Bursa.

7. An Unforgettable Night: The Sema Ceremony and the Warmth of Muslims

The ultimate highlight of our trip was attending the mystical Sema (Whirling Dervishes) ceremony. Following information from the local municipality website, we navigated deep into the residential alleys to the ‘Karabaş-ı Veli Kültür Merkezi’ at 9:00 PM. Due to local schedules, the sacred ritual was delayed until 11:30 PM.

Seeing a stranded traveling couple in the winter cold, the Sufi dervishes warmly invited us into their private rooms. Adhering to spiritual tradition, men and women waited in separate quarters—my wife was escorted to the women’s area, while I sat with the male dervishes. For two hours, they generously served us hot traditional lentil soup (Çorba) with bread and endless glasses of hot Turkish tea (Chai). We connected deeply using mobile translators, feeling their unconditional hospitality.

Past midnight, the ceremony commenced in a traditional circular hall where men sat on the ground floor and women watched from the 2nd-floor balcony (Mahfil).

Sema is a symbolic ritual of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) in which practitioners dressed in white slowly and silently circle in one direction. The right hand points toward the sky to welcome Allah, while the left hand points toward the earth to convey Allah’s message of peace, love, and tolerance; the brown cap worn on the head is said to symbolize a ‘tombstone.’ The fingertips pointing toward the sky while circling symbolize the way humans connect with God. A state where the body moves, yet the mind is completely still.

The sight of the dervishes spinning continuously in white skirts, with one hand pointing to heaven and the other to earth, was spiritually breathtaking. Yet, what left the most permanent mark on our souls was not the performance, but the pure, unconditional kindness of the Muslim community who welcomed us like family.
